“The believability of virtuality is oft superior to the unrealness of reality” ― Vineet Raj Kapoor

Description

Inside a digital society, indigenous games are highly regarded as foundational, yet also considered to be an obsolete element of human culture in juxtaposition to electronic games, which are deliberated as cultural and media vanguards in today’s fast-paced world. Perhaps, these primordial human urges are the reason why educational games are still deeply entrenched in the digital culture. In today’s digital environment, educational institutions must comprehend the complexities of incorporating digital games in education in order to survive and cope up in a technologically-biased pedagogical landscape. Our Educational Visual Novel course is a comprehensive course that takes you through all of the stages of graphic novel development, from concept to completion. This graphic educational novel course brings a strong written component together with implementation in digital tools such as Ren'Py. The aim of this course is to teach digital story and game development stages and tools. To date, storytelling has remained an educational tool. Storytelling is a powerful pedagogical approach to disseminating learning outcomes in general, scientific, and technological education. Today, individuals continue to tell the story by using new digital media tools. The digital story is seen as a combination of traditional storytelling and multimedia technologies. Today, many communication technologies and multimedia tools are used. Using these technologies and tools, storytelling has changed and transformed into digital storytelling. With this course, it is aimed to give information to the teachers about the adaptation of the digital games, which are widely used today, to the lessons with their effective and motivating aspects.

Approach

This course will be focusing on practical and skills-based interactive learning. Digital storytelling storyline structures provide the frames for the teachers and their students to externalize and communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a coherent and appealing manner. By the end of the course, participants will have acquired a greater knowledge about creative storytelling storylines and increase their 4Cs (creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking) and PERMA skills building life, soft and life-long learning skills and abilities. They will also shed light into the technical aspect of digital storytelling with interactive tools in order to create their own educational visual novels. Brainstorming and cooperative working will be main aspects of the course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course all participants will be able to identify components of digital games and storytelling practices. Getting familiar with the key issues and concerns about blending story and and digital games will also be one the main goals of the course. Among other objectives of the course, the participants will learn effective teaching strategies and how to implement them using multimedia digital tools with minimal coding experience required.
